Dear Nani, so many memories to look back at.
I have had the privilege of your support and kind advice during most of my academic career, since I came to the Department of Modern Georgian at Tbilisi State University and you were appointed my supervisor in 1987. I remember sitting many times in your study on Ateni street, and we were working and discussing the progress of my dissertation in the very cosy home athmosphere. Your doctoral dissertation Padezh i glagol’nye kategorii v gruzinskom predlozhenii [Case and verbal categories in the Georgian clause] was very inspirational for my thesis work.
Nani Chanishvili was a very hospitable person, not only in her home, but also welcoming my colleagues from Lund University, who visited Tbilisi State University in 1990. Together we planned and organized a joint linguistic conference in April 1989: Ibero-Caucasian Languages from the Viewpoint of General and Typological Linguistics (Link to the book of abstracts). This joint Georgian-Swedish conference was cancelled because of the tragic events in Tbilisi on April 9, and the Swedish linguists from Lund University were stopped in Moscow on April 8 on their way to Georgia.

The same year, in December 1989, Prof. Nani Chanishvili was invited to the Department of Linguistics, Lund University (Sweden) in connection with the defense of my doctoral thesis. She played a very important role at this event, and, of course, it was a great joy to celebrate together with her at the following supra in the evening,
Nani Chanishvili was instrumental in setting up a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between Tbilisi State University and Lund University, and later also between Tbilisi State University and Malmö University. She contributed in various ways to the exchange of students and staff between Tbilisi and Ludn/Malmö. One of the early events was the Days of Georgia in Lund, organized at Lund University in 1991 (program).
Prof. Nani Chanishvii was a frequent visitor to Sweden, both to Lund University and later to Malmö University. She participated in several academic conferences and workshops, including the first conference in Caucasus Studies at Malml University in 2005 Language, History and Cultural Identities in the Caucasus (link to photos and information; video (1,50)). In March 2008 Prof. Nani Chanishvili, gave the presentation Russian – Georgian relations. Current issues at Malmö University and later the same year she was invited to participate in a the conference Caucasus Studies: Migration, Society, and Language at Malmö University.

Nani Chanishvili has been a close colleague and friend to the whole family, and we gratefully look back at and remember so many wonderful meetings and supras together.
