It was a pleasure to take part in the online conference  “Inter-ethnic and International Relations in the Caucasus: Historical-Political, Linguistic, Cultural and Confessional Units – Lost and Preserved”, organized by the Circassian Culture Center on December 24-25, 2020, with researchers from Georgia, the North Caucasus and beyond, presenting papers in Georgian, Circassian, Russian and English. Many thanks to the organizers!

My presentation at the conference was on the topic: Circassia in Swedish eighteenth-century newspapers.

The first mentioning of Circassia occurs in 1733 (see below). What was known about Circassia? It which contexts are Circassia and Circassians mentioned? The Swedish press at the time had limited access to information from the Caucasus region, and relied largely on Turkish and European sources.  The most extensive material on the Circassians is the two-page article “On the Circassians” in the paper ‘Stockholmsposten’, 1791, providing a rather detailed description of Circassian traditions and ways of living.

Рада была принять участие в Международной конференции “V интернациональная научная сессия Черкесского (Адыгского) Культурного Центра”, которая проходила на разных языках: грузинском, черкесском, русском и английском. Большое спасибо организатором конференции в онлайн режиме.

Моя тема на конференции была Черкессия в шведской прессе 18-го века.

Первое упоминание о Черкессии относится к 1733 году. Что было известно о Черкессии? В каких контекстах встречаются упоминание о Черкессии и о черкесах? В шведской прессе того периода материалы в основном  поступали из турецких и европейских сточников. Самым обширным материалом в объеме двух страниц встречается статья ‘О черкесах’ в газете ‘Стокгольмская почта’, 1791 г. В статье описывается быт и культура черкесов того периода.
